Are We There Yet?

Are We There Yet?

George Orwell’s 1984 was first published on June 8th 1949, and it was about a future that was unimaginable.  Yet, when I first read the book, it took my thoughts in two directions:

  • I had too much faith in the strength of the United States Constitution, to even consider such a future coming to past.
  • As we inched closer to 1984, I dreaded the possibility that I might recognize some of the scenes described in the book.

When the year 1984 came and went, I had a feeling that the novel had been not much more than a great work of fiction.  However, as we make progress into the digital age, satellites, wireless communications, drones, and improved surveillance cameras, etc., etc. could it happen in our country?  Not likely, our lawmakers will protect our constitutional rights, or will they?  Wait, there is the Journalist who have dedicated their lives to uncovering the truth and reporting it, they will keep everyone on the straight and narrow, won’t they?

60 years after Orwell wrote 1984 and was destroyed by the book, a chilling reminder that his sinister vision is almost reality- By Robert Harris
A movie was also made about “1984,” starring John Hurt and Richard Burton.  Both the book and movie are still available for purchase or rent.  I realize that it isn’t Halloween on Freight Night, but if you feel like scaring yourself, sit down in a quiet place with a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and enjoy one or the other; “Go ahead I dare you.”  Our nation has many better days ahead of it!  The best is yet to come…..
